A really uncomfortable night with my back playing up :( but quiet night in
our sheltered spot and woke to the most amazing sunrise and were
entertained by loads of flamingos nearby. There didn’t appear to be much
wind so had a lovely relaxing start with breakfast and reading in the warm
sunshine with not a cloud in the sky:) Then at midday we decided to give La
Franqui wooden jetty a look, there were loads of cars/vans already there
but mostly parked the Port La Nouvelle side where all the windsurfers were
sailing. The kiters were the La Franqui side. It was mainly the same bunch
as yesterday with the wind in the same direction but lighter which meant
there was no sailing in the flat water near the beach, just runs out to sea
in the up and down winds. I decided to give it a miss, if you were going to
sail in the lumpy sea you might as well sail in the safer etang so we
headed to Port La Nautique taking the slightly longer scenic route past
Peyric and Bages. The etang was busy with windsurfers as there was a race
meeting in full swing from the sailing club and the 20 or so windsurfers
were going flat out with big sails. For the freeride sailors it looked more
up and down so after parking at our favourite spot right on the bank (the
caravan there on Friday had moved:) We had lunch and I was watching the
windsurfing action, intending to read and enjoy the sunshine but changed my
mind and decided to give it a go. I quickly rigged the 7m with my 282.
Although this is the nicest place to park for peace and quiet launching is
not perfect because of a wind shadow and shallow water but after walking
200/300 m in the etang mud I found the wind and deeper water. It was then
nonstop action for 2 hours sailing the mile over to the very pretty Bages
with the water sparkling in the sunshine. You had to watch out for fishing
nets in a couple of places but they were marked with flags and sticks so
you could avoid them with ease:) and gybing right in front of the old town
on the hill is amazing! I was getting 26kt runs but then the wind increased
and I upped it to 28 kts going really broad in the rolling swell – great
fun. There were several kiters out mainly on foils, sadly they rarely look
when turning and I did have a near miss with one and a few words all lost
in translation! I was pleased with the stats – not bad for a lumpy Etang
:) Then it was back to Mag for a relax, cuppa and cake, followed by a nice
walk. Returned to the van to de-rig as the sun set and finished with Lidl
Paella for tea – yum yum. Top day:)
